China Through The Looking Glass: Met Gala 2015

The annual Met Gala (which happened last week Monday) is an event I eagerly anticipate every year. Also known as the Costume Institute Gala, the fundraising collected from one of fashion’s biggest events benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s costume institute in New York City. Each year the dress code is chosen to celebrate that year’s theme of the Costume Institution Exhibition. Its essentially a costume ball so everyone is expected to go over the top.

This year’s theme was China Through The Looking Glass and although I was somewhat disappointed with the overall correlation to the theme, there were still many beautiful looks that we just have to discuss.

Favourite Looks According to the Theme

Diane Kruger 2

Diane looks exquisite and effortless (as she always does). The flowers in her hair and the red bag make it feel more Chinese for me. I probably wouldn’t have been as obsessed with this look as I am, if it wasn’t accessorized with that little red bag. The bag is everything.

Sienna Miller in Thakoon

I am such a sucker for androgynous fashion and love pieces inspired by menswear. This sequin tuxedo ensemble on Sienna Miller is brilliant. The colour, belt and earrings are right on point with Chinese inspiration. Personal opinion: I would have preferred the hair in a high top knot as opposed to a low bun.

This look for me represents modern Asian minimalism. Its so different and unexpected for the Met. I have such a soft spot for asymmetry so its no wonder I’m obsessed with this long halter top/dress. And the print is just gorgeous.

This whole ensemble is a real show stopper. Its so beautifully tailored, elegant and true to theme. Fan looks like a real modern-day Chinese empress.

Zendaya in Fausto Puglisi

This look on Zendaya is so fun an exciting. The dress is so original and I’m totally obsessed with how the matching headband and arm cuffs perfectly compliment the pattern on the dress.

Joan Smalls in Roberto Cavalli

There’s not really much to say about this look. Its just perfection. Love the asymmetry of the dress and the cut out by the belt. The black choker and the smoky eyes tie the whole look together perfectly.

Rihanna in Guo Pei

Rihanna’s over-the-top canary yellow Asian-inspired coat is everything. The Met Gala is the one night of the fashion calendar when you literally either go big or go home and Rihanna certainly went big! (The coat took two years to make and had two people on each side ‘facilitating’ it upon Rihanna’s entrance). Lately Rihanna’s red carpet ensembles are way over the top (remember that pink ball gown she wore to the Grammy’s earlier this year?) But she has such a way of wearing the clothes not letting the clothes wear her (or drowning in these huge mountains of material). She always brings her own personality and presence to the look so that even if you want to hate it, you can’t. And besides, I’m totally smitten with this exquisite gold headpiece.

Beyonce in Givenchy[1]

Beyoncé SLAYED it on the red carpet in this sheer dress with beautiful sequin detail. No one else could have rocked it the way that she did (or worn it for that matter). Perfection all around. You can’t help but be obsessed.

Zoe Kravitz in Alexander Wang

I love this chain look on Zoe. I think she looks so cool and edgy. Would have rather loved this look for 2013’s Met Gala where the theme was Punk: Chaos to Couture.

Kim Kardashian in Roberto Cavali

Kim looked exquisite in this sheer white gown with feather and diamante details. So chic and elegant. Really beautiful.

Side Note…

FKA Twigs in Christopher Kane

This whole ensemble on FKA twigs is head-to-toe perfection except its just the wrong event. Its’ a little bit underwhelming for this year’s Met Gala theme. If she wore it to a different event it would definitely have been top on my best dressed list.
